To win a major sports championship, the first step is to qualify for the playoffs. For the first time in almost eight decades, a Washington D.C. major league baseball team is in the conversation. The Washington Nationals make the post season for the first time since 1933. Excuse me for saying this but...wow.
The Nats are on pace to win 99 games for the season. If they reach that mark, they will have a .600 winning percentage for the year, which is a big deal in baseball. In the past 50 years, seven current franchises have never won 98 and six others have only had one such .600 season. That’s 13 teams, or nearly half the entire sport. They have given up the fewest earned runs per game (ERA) for the season and are second in the National League in home runs.
For me, the difference has been the should-be-the-manager of the year Davey Johnson. Having the right manager can make all the difference in the world. Ask last year's champs, the Cardinals, who won 90 games with future Hall-of-Famer Tony LaRussa last year.
Next step for my dream World Series matchup are the Orioles, who are still in the hunt for their own playoff spot. The Birds, who have won seven of their last ten, go to Boston this weekend hoping to keep pace.
The dream continues.
