- I've gotten some comments regarding Raven QB Joe Flacco's stewardship of this team. In reviewing his stats: he is 11th in the league in passing yards (2,433), has a passer rating of 92.1 (14th in the league), thrown 13 TD's for 13th in the league and seven picks (17th overall). So far this year, he has not cost his team any games, which has been the Raven Super Bowl formula in the past. So Raven Nation, can you win a Super Bowl with Joe Flacco?
- I got to see Manny Pacquiao win his eight title belt this past weekend by beating down Antonio Margarito, who I give credit for his gladiator effort. We may be seeing one of the greatest fighters of all time, pound for pound ever. I can see why "Pretty Boy" Mayweather wants no parts of him. The next fight for me, would be Pacquiao against the guy who knocked the _____ out of Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez. (see link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I1e0P8vSHw ) This is a candidate for Knockout of the year.
- The San Antonio Spurs have opened up the season 12-1 with a eleven game winning streak. They have won all five of their road games this year.

Random Thoughts - The Remix
Before we start to enjoy the bird and the ball for the holiday season, some random thoughts:

Who you got?
The sports page is flipping the script today, but before that a correction. I reported that Skins QB Donovan McNabb was to receive a ten million signing bonus when he signed his 78 million contract earlier in the week. Instead, the QB is to receive a 3.5 million payout this year with the remaining bonus money to be paid out if he is on the roster next season. Just want to get it right.
Today's blog is about the National Hockey League. Even if you don't keep up with the league, you can relate with they are going to do regarding their all-star game this year. The league is designating two "superstars", Washington Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin and Pittsburgh Penguin center Sidney Crosby, to basically select the players for this year's game. They just take turns picking their teams.
The NHL has always been willing to try something different for it's league. They were on the brink of bankruptcy a few years back, but have become relevant again. I appreciate the willingness to try something different, but it's missing one major component: the fans. Now, I'm a closet hockey fan. My love for the game goes all the way back to high school when I hip checked a guy into the seats while playing intramural floor hockey and IT WAS LEGAL. If I knew how to skate, I would have been one of those enforcer types in the league. Sorry, I got caught up like Funkadelic's Alice in my Fantasies. I digress. To say the least, I would defiantly 'rock the red' at Capitals home games. The fans are a league's bloodline and they should be involved in the process to select the league's best. While hockey is a very barbaric (but enjoyable) game, any other way to select the All-Stars would be uncivilized.
Today's Friday's Freeze jukebox is a bit eclectic: Run DMC and who else Funkadelic (only for the very funky):

I was...wait a minute
How ya doin sports fans? As the 80's dance cut goes, let's start the dance.
I'm one of those guys who doesn't have a problem admitting that he was wrong. So when I saw the sports flash that said that Skins QB Donovan McNabb had signed an five year extension worth $78 million dollars, I was ready to admit that I was wrong. After the way that he was disrespected two weeks ago, no way he comes back to DC. But, wait a minute there's more to the story.
Aside from the do-la-la-ars (respect to my boy Wally Gator) he got, there is more. According to ESPN, there is language in the contract that includes an opt-out clause by the team that can release him if he is not basically playing to their satisfaction after this year. Sound familiar? So while he DID get a ten million dollar payment off the top, the remainder (40 million of the contract is guaranteed) is still in the Skins pocket.
So while we have DNabb thru this year, there still is no guarantee that he will be here next year. This seems to be a public relations hustle by the Skins to calm the fan base regarding Shanny's debacle two weeks ago. It would have worked better if our varsity team had shown up last night.
LaRon Landry got a reminder that this is the professional level of football. Give props to Desean Jackson, who bounced back from a serious concussion earlier in the year to shut Landry up on the Eagles first play from scrimmage, burning him on a 88 yard bomb. Landry had mentioned (to put it lightly) the concussion in the pre-game, nearly causing a pre-game scrum. But at the end of the night, the Skins got a full taste of the Michael Vick experience. You already know.

Choice
This is one of those blogs that will probably offend someone. But I need another perspective on this story. Please understand that this is the pursuit of understanding and knowledge.
Junior Kye Allums plays for the George Washington women's basketball team. This player has made history by being the first transgender player in Division I history. He has decided to identify himself as a male. As for completion of the process (i.e., hormone treatment and sexual reassignment surgery), he will not start that until the end of his senior year. This was determined after consulting with the NCAA regarding eligibility.
He simply said that he is a male on the women's basketball team. Huh? Just like that? It can not be that simple. I must qualify this by saying that for society's purposes, I do not have a problem with the choices he makes regarding his gender of choice. But if he wants to consider himself a male, then fine, but he should not be able to play on the women's basketball team just as he should not be able to play on the women's softball team. What if I choose to be a female and then want to play on the women's rugby team. My girlfriend should know that this is just for the sake of argument; I am very happy with my gender. For me, let him keep his scholarship, but he should not be allowed to play the gender team of his choice. It is a case of black & white and unlike Michael Jackson, in this case it does matter.
What do you think? What am I missing?
The BreezyG Sports page will be off all next week as I pursue the completion of academic pursuits attending both day and evening classes. I may find time to put something on the page, but then again...in either case, enjoy your weekend.
The Friday Freeze Jukebox goes way back in the stacks with Inner City (remember them?)

Something like a phenomenon...
It's like the above LL Cool J rap line: When you're talkin about Wiz guard John Wall, it's like I said when I first blogged about him playing in summer league all the way to last night's game...wow.
In his first home game, he was a steal (not a rebound) away from his first career triple double, finishing with 29 points and 13 assists. With his 31 assists and 71 points in his first three games, Wall joins very elite company, becoming only the second player in league history to record 70+ points and 30+ assists in his first three games in the league. The other player was Oscar Robertson. Aside from the tying the team record for most steals in a game, he also tied a league record with the most assists after three games.
He just showed a will just not wanting to lose. One play late in the game, he ran down skywalker Andre Iguodala and almost cleanly blocked his dunk attempt. The entire game he was just a whirling dervish, picking a pass off here, hitting a jump shot there and just having 76ers looking for him the entire game. By the way, he did this playing on a sprained ankle.
Since he has been here, it's hard not to like the guy. He has said and done all the right things. It's also hard not wanting to at least take a sip of the koolaid. You guys are going to get tired of me saying this but....wow.
The Freeze jukebox gives you the LL Cool J video Phenomenon as a musical treat. This video was also ahead of it's self at the time:

WTF?!!?
I'm not sure what today's blog is about. Ego? Control? Stupidity? You be the judge.
With less than two minutes to go in yesterday's contest between the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions and the Skins down by six, head coach Mike Shanahan benched starting QB Donavan McNabb in favor of backup Rex Grossman. On his first play, Grossman is sacked and fumbles the ball to the Lions, who recovered the fumble and took to the house for the clinching touchdown. The loss sends the Skins into their bye week at the .500 mark (4-4), still better then this time last year.
After the game, Shanahan said that he made the change because Grossman had a better understanding of the two-minute offense. Huh? According to the Washington Post, while it is true that Grossman knows the system because he spent last season with Houston, where the offensive coordinator was Kyle Shanahan (Mike's son who is now the Redskins' offensive coordinator), Grossman was then, too, a backup, and he played in just one game, throwing nine passes and completing just three. He never ran the two-minute offense for the Texans.
What kind of message does this send to McNabb? For his part, he was the consummate professional, just saying that "When you get benched, you get benched, no matter how you look at it." You just have to learn from it and move on. I did that then, and I'll do that now." Remember, the same thing happened almost two years ago when he was benched in a game against the Ravens, the only other benching of his career. While DNabb has not been setting the world on fire this season, he has improved the play at that postion for the Skins in comparison to last year.
Let me make it plain. This tells me that McNabb is not in the future plans of the Washington Redskins. To treat a probable HOF quarterback as shabbily as that pretty much says it all. And just as it was starting to look better for my team, it looks like (once again) that I'll be asking to hitch a ride on the Ravens bandwagon this playoff season. The ride is always bumpier in the back.
Also have to give a RIP to one of the earlier "tough guys" in my sports generation. Maurice Lucas, a five time All-Star who helped the Portland Trail Blazers win the 1977 NBA Title, passed away yesterday at the age of 58. Called "The Enforcer", he played in the NBA for 12 seasons, averaging 14.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for his career. As a aside, Bill Walton named his son, who currently plays for the Lakers, after him, Luke. He is survived by wife Pamela, sons David and Maurice II and daughter Kristin.
